On the 7th of March 2021, Rovingheights Books hosted readers (and fans) at their new bookstore located at Victoria Island, Lagos, in conjunction with the Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka. The crux of the event was the launch of Soyinka’s latest book, Trumpism In Academe; a 123-paged ballistic essay of “chastening paracletes” aimed at intellectuals who dogmatize sensationalism, call spades cutlasses, and are never short of tall tales (especially within the framework of history and politics).
An excerpt from the book reads: While our own “dear native land” must claim credit from inspiring the sub-series TheRepublic of Liars within the general series of Interventions…There are challengers and even-champions – elsewhere, seeking to wrest the laurel of lies from our own inspirational nation. Within these pages, I present my chastening paracletes and their industry—from the world of sophisticates of modern intellection.
The book is part of the Interventions series, with themes which “vary literally from the sublime to the ridiculous, from national foibles to the tragic face of nation existence, from citizen derelictions and delinquencies to government criminalities and betrayals of trust, from the celebration of life and other eulogiesto lamentations. Failed projects. Occasional triumphs. They are narratives of the ‘bad, the good, and the ugly’ in encounters high and low.”
The event which was scheduled to last for two hours, featured an hour interactive session with Soyinka, plus book signing afterwards. The attendees, clad in colorful smiles, attires and nose masks, unanimously described the book launch as wholesome and exhilarating.
