This international-student friendly institution founded in 1965 is known for its groundbreaking discovery in programs such as Engineering, Computer Science, Business, Natural Resources Management, Health Sciences, Education and Social Sciences. Its graduate programs are offered across its two campuses, with popular ones being MSc Computer Science, MSc Engineering, MA, MEd, MBA, and several science + health programs. Due to its influence, it attracts applicants from more than 80 countries.

Admission to the University is currently open for Winter, which shall end in September. International Students are advised to apply to Fall intake which will commence in September. Some programs have much earlier dates than others. It is important to check your program page for the most accurate dates.

Lakehead University offers scholarship for students who are admitted. They give the Merits Entrance Scholarship for International Applicants, especially to MSc Computer Science and MSc Engineering at Thunder Bay or Barrie. This scholarship is given based on the converted admission average when your Letter of Acceptance is issued. They also offer graduate assistantship for full-time study which includes student visa and compensation. Awardees are expected to teach, grade, supervise lab, and others jobs as specified by the department. All PhD students are awarded this scholarship automatically.

The University also awards applicants the President’s International Scholar’s Award, which waive tuition fee and is renewable for 4 years. This scholarship is for outstanding doctoral students. To qualify for this scholarship, you must apply. Applicants must submit the following documents:

Transcripts: Lakehead wants 1 official copy of your complete academic record sent directly from each institution you attended. The transcript must have the institution’s seal and its signature. If it’s not in English/French, you must add a notarized translation. For assessment, you can upload unofficial transcripts first, but you won’t be allowed to register until final official transcripts arrive.

Letters of Recommendation: Most programs ask for 2 references. For example, the TRANSFOR-M program requires 2 letters using Lakehead’s enclosed form, and referees must send them directly to the program coordinator. Lakehead doesn’t accept letters sent by you — they must come from the referee’s official email.

CV/Resume: This also varies according to departments. But where it is stated, the applicant must upload a copy of his academic or professional experience in a field, and how this experience has prepared him for graduate school.

Statement of Interest: also letter of intent, the SOP is the document where your motivation and your background experience has prepared you for graduate school. Though the length differs, it is usually fewer than 2 pages.

English Proficiency: In a situation where yhe medium of instruction or your previous degree is not in English, you will need to provide English proficiency test results.

IELTS/ TOEFL/ Duolingo: There are no score range for this tests but differs according to departments and their needs.
