JAUW International Fellowship 2027

The Japanese Association of University Women (JAUW) International Fellowship Program is an annual fellowship awarded to non-Japanese women researchers to provide partial financial support for conducting research in Japan.

Established in 1987 through generous donations to the Association, the fellowship supports research stays of four to six months, typically between September and March, at a Japanese university or research institute.

Each fellowship is worth up to ¥1,000,000 (approximately €7,300). Successful applicants generally receive between ¥600,000 and ¥900,000, depending on the duration of their research stay. A maximum of two fellowships are awarded each year.

Applicants must hold at least a master’s degree or its equivalent. Doctoral candidates who have progressed beyond the master’s level are also eligible to apply.

Before applying, candidates must identify a host university or research institute in Japan and obtain a Letter of Acceptance from a prospective host supervisor.

To apply, applicants must submit the following documents:

  1. Application Form 1
  2. Application Form 2
  3. Three letters of recommendation from different referees
  4. Letter of Acceptance from the prospective host supervisor
  5. Certificate of Health

Recipients are expected to carry out the research project outlined in their application. At the end of the fellowship period, awardees must submit a 500–700-word research report and deliver an oral presentation of their research in Tokyo. JAUW will cover travel expenses for the presentation.

Awardees are also expected to acknowledge JAUW’s support in any publications resulting from research conducted during the fellowship. Any significant changes to the approved research schedule must receive prior approval from the Chair of the International Fellowship Committee.

The JAUW International Fellowship Program is expected to reopen for applications in March 2027.
