Teachers from around the globe are encouraged to apply for teaching jobs in Canada. Teachers can come from any field, though preference is given to those specializing in STEM, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, and French Immersion. Teaching jobs are available in all 13 provinces and territories of Canada, especially in British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces.
To qualify to apply, all foreign-trained teachers must obtain a provincial teaching certificate in Canada. Applicants who already have job offers or possess urgently needed skills can apply through immigration pathways such as Express Entry and the Provincial Nominee Program to obtain permanent residency. Although not required, having knowledge of French is an additional advantage when applying.
Applicants should note the following steps for securing a teaching certificate in Canada. Kindly note that without this certificate, it is impossible to teach or obtain a teaching job.
Step 1: Choose a province: Canada currently has 13 provinces and territories, and each has its own regulatory teaching body, separate agency, and specific application requirements. Step 2: Verify eligibility: It is mandatory that applicants have obtained a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and a language proficiency test result at the time of application. Applicants must have their education credentials evaluated by authorized bodies such as WES (World Education Services) or ICAS (International Credential Assessment Service) to verify that they meet Canadian standards.
Step 3: Apply for provincial certification: Once Step 2 has been completed, the next step is to apply for certification. The following are the documents applicants must submit:
• Valid proof of identity: Applicants must submit valid proof of identity in high-quality PDF format. Acceptable documents include, but are not limited to, a passport, birth certificate, or voter’s card.
• Recent criminal background check: Applicants must sign a declaration stating whether they have committed any crimes. If an applicant has no criminal history, he or she must sign a declaration affirming this. However, if any information is later found to be fraudulent, the applicant’s application may be rejected, and the applicant may be banned from applying to Canada.
• Academic transcripts and degree certificates: These documents must have been evaluated by either WES or ICAS.
• Language proficiency test results: Most provinces require the IELTS Academic test, with an overall score of 6.5 to 7.0 and no band score below 6.0. Provinces and territories may have slightly different requirements. Some French-speaking provinces require the TEF.
• Certified translations of documents if the academic documents are in a language other than English or French.
• Applicable application fees: These differ by province or territory. Applicants are encouraged to check the requirements for their chosen province or territory to confirm the applicable fee and payment method.
Step 4: Receive certification: Once all requirements have been met, you will be granted your teaching certificate or license, allowing you to work in schools within that province or territory. Certain provinces or territories may allow you to begin teaching with an interim or provisional certificate while you work toward full certification. For instance, in Alberta, you can receive an Interim Professional Certificate valid for three years. After completing two years of satisfactory teaching experience, you can apply for a Permanent Professional Certificate.
Applicants are also encouraged to apply for a teaching license. To do so, have your degree and certificates evaluated by WES or ICAS. After your educational credentials have been confirmed, you will be required to apply to the teaching regulatory body in your chosen province or territory. Your application will most likely include academic transcripts, proof of English or French language proficiency (such as IELTS or TEF), a clean criminal record check, and, in some cases, proof of current teaching experience.
After fulfilling all the requirements, you will be granted a teaching certificate or license, which allows you to apply for teaching jobs within that province or territory. Applicants are advised to conduct thorough research before applying.
