The Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) is now accepting applications from outstanding African students seeking to pursue fully funded Master’s degree studies in fields that are critical to Africa’s sustainable development. Applicants must be based in one of these fields: Energy. Agriculture, Health, Environmental Sustainability, and Engineering.
“Jointly established by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Japan, the scholarship aims to strengthen Africa’s human resource capacity by equipping future leaders with advanced knowledge and technical skills needed to accelerate development across the continent. The scholarship provides exceptional students from eligible African countries with the opportunity to undertake postgraduate studies at selected partner universities while receiving comprehensive financial support throughout their academic journey.”
Applications are received year round, except stated otherwise by the board. Successful applicants receive full tuition fee coverage for up to 24 months, covering the entire duration of the eligible graduate programme. They also receive monthly stipend throughout their studies to help cover living expenses and health insurance. For applicants from outside Japan, the scholarship offers economy-class ticket from the country to the host university and back to the country upon successful completion of the scholarship.
Kindly note that graduates applied for this scholarship are expected to return to their home countries after completing their studies to apply their newly acquired expertise toward advancing national and continental development priorities.
Unlike many scholarship programmes, applicants do not submit a separate scholarship application directly to the African Development Bank.
The applicants should note the following processes of applying for the scholarship:
- Identify a participating JADS partner university.
- Contact the university to request admission information and application procedures.
- Submit an application for admission to the selected university.
- The university evaluates applications and issues provisional admission offers to successful candidates.
- The university nominates selected candidates to the African Development Bank.
- The African Development Bank, together with the JADS Programme Implementation Unit (PIU), evaluates nominated applicants.
- Successful scholarship recipients are notified by the African Development Bank.
- Only candidates who have been admitted to a participating JADS partner university and formally endorsed by that university will be considered for the scholarship.
