The University of Notre Dame is opening application for its Ph.D in Sustainable Development Fully Funded programme. Hosted by the Keough School of Global Affairs, the programme is STEM-designated and combines rigorous academic training, research, mentorship and policy engagement for scholars seeking to address some of the world’s most pressing environmental, economic and development challenges.

Applications are currently open for the Fall 2027 intake, with interested candidates required to apply by December 1, 2026. The programme is particularly suited to individuals interested in climate change, environmental governance, sustainable development and development policy, with research opportunities that connect academic inquiry to real-world global challenges.

The University of Notre Dame provides comprehensive financial support to admitted students in the Ph.D. in Sustainable Development programme. The funding package includes a 12-month stipend for living expenses, a full tuition scholarship and a health insurance subsidy. Students may also receive up to $4,000 for conference presentations and professional development, helping them participate in academic conferences and develop their professional networks.

As part of their professional development, students are required to apply for at least one external grant or fellowship valued at $10,000 by their fourth year.

The programme welcomes applicants from diverse academic, cultural and professional backgrounds. Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate strong academic preparation in a relevant discipline and a clear commitment to addressing global sustainable development challenges.

Applicants must submit a statement of purpose, academic transcripts, GRE scores, a writing sample and three letters of recommendation. Applicants who are not native English speakers must also provide an accepted English-language proficiency test, such as TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo.

Candidates are expected to submit their applications and supporting documents through the University of Notre Dame Graduate School application portal.

The programme is particularly relevant for researchers seeking an interdisciplinary doctoral education that combines sustainable development scholarship with policy engagement and practical global impact.
