Nigerian writer and filmmaker Onyeka Nwelue is facing renewed scrutiny on social media after users recently called on him to respond to allegations surrounding a Japanese residency document he previously shared. The discussion resurfaced days after Culture Custodian published Dami Ajayi’s “Professor Nwelue, I Presume?”, which examined a series of controversies involving Nwelue, including his former association with the University of Oxford and a 2025 Washington Post investigation that linked a pseudonymous writer of AI-generated articles to businesses associated with him. Nwelue has denied involvement in the latter allegations.

The latest discussion centres on claims about a letter Nwelue had publicly said Wole Soyinka helped him secure for a Japanese residency application. On X, writer Gbénró Adégbolá questioned how Soyinka would regard the allegation, while Lọlá Shónẹ́yìn responded that members of Soyinka’s family had previously asked him about the document. According to Shónẹ́yìn, Soyinka was clear that he had neither written nor signed a letter recommending Nwelue to the Japanese government, immigration authorities or visa office. Nwelue has not publicly responded to the renewed discussion at the time of publication.

The resurfacing of the allegation has also revived broader conversations about Nwelue’s long history of public controversies, including the circumstances surrounding his departure from Oxford in 2023. Reports at the time raised questions about his use of university affiliations and the organisation of events on campus, while Nwelue disputed aspects of the reporting and characterised the episode as a campaign against him. With renewed calls for him to comment on the Japan document, the latest discussion adds another episode to the continuing public scrutiny surrounding the writer and his professional and institutional claims.
