The Somali-British novelist Nadifa Mohamed won the Wales Book of the Year with her third novel, The Fortune Men. Before clenching the prize, she had won two awards: Rhys Davies Trust Fiction Award and Wales Arts Review People’s Choice Award. Fortune Men was also shortlisted for Booker Prize in 2021.

The Wales Book of the Year is an annual prize which celebrates “outstanding literary talents from Wales across any genres and in both English and Welsh”.

There are four categories in each language—fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, children and young people—with one of the winners in the four categories announced as the Overall Winner, and having the title: Wales Book of the Year 2022.

Nadifa Mohammed will be awarded a cash prize of £4,000 and the Wales Book of the Year trophy.
