
Built in the heart of downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg in Canada is a mid-sized urban campus well-known for being community-focused and student-centered. The University has several scholarships opportunities for both home based applicants and international students.The most direct scholarship you can apply for is the President’s Scholarship for World Leaders, worth 5,000 dollars. It’s open to all international students entering the first year of any graduate program, and it rewards both academic excellence and leadership. To qualify, you need at least an 80% admission average and you must submit a separate application with a 250-500 word personal statement, CV, and two reference letters. For international applicants, the admission process begins with the online application portal, which opens every November 1. If you’re aiming for a September start, which is the main intake for most programs, you need to have all your documents submitted by February 1. The university also offers a January start for the Master of Science in Applied Computer Science, with a July 1 deadline, and a May start for select programs with a December 1 deadline. Because study permit processing for Canada can take several months, it’s smart to apply as early as possible once the portal opens.
During admission process, applicants are required to upload the following documents. Note that the documents must be uploaded on the university’s online form.
Transcripts: Applicants are to upload a scanned copy of all university’s transcript you once attended. At this stage, they don’t need to be certified at this point. It is unofficial. What counts as unofficial are PDF scans of original transcripts whether or not you got a degree there. You will need to upload, at the time of registration, an official translation if the transcript is not in English or French. You are to upload them on the “Supporting Documentation” tab on the form. Note that your application won’t be reviewed if you don’t upload one. Once you’re granted admission, UWinnipeg will demand for official transcripts. “Official” means sealed envelope sent directly from your university’s registrar/awards office to UWinnipeg, OR sent electronically through services like WES, MyCreds, Parchment, Digitary, etc. They must have the registrar’s stamp/signature and can’t be opened by you. Letters of Recommendation: The University uses a reference form system for recommendations. On the online form, you will be required to enter the name and the email of at least 2 recommenders who are familiar with your works. This can be academic or professional, depending on department’s specification. Once you submit their information, the system will email them a fillable PDF Reference Form. They must complete it and send it together with their letter to d.habtemariam@uwinnipeg.ca. Letters submitted by the applicants are deemed unacceptable.
Letter of Intent: Otherwise known as Statement of Purpose. The letter of intent covers your motivation and your reason for wishing to study in UWinnipeg. The letter should be exactly 250-500 word long. On the website, the University emphasizes it should be a personal writeup about your interest and motivation, not a generic statement.
CV/ Resume: This varies according to departments and your field of study. Where required, you will be required to upload a CV of your academic records and professional, if it is available..
Writing Sample: This requirement cut across all departments. The university requires a writing sample of of 3000-4500 words to properly assess your understanding of your field. This sample can be thesis based or essays, depending on the course.
English Proficiency: you will need to upload an English language test results to assert your proficiency of the language. Acceptable scores are IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 550/213, Duolingo 120, CAEL 60. These scores are only valid for two years.
Passport copy: One the submission form, you will need to upload a photographed copy of your passport, including the necessary details.
