Canada has an ongoing demand fornurses, and many hospitals, healthcare authorities, and other healthcare employers are actively recruiting qualified nurses from around the world, including Africa. Qualified and experienced nurses are encouraged to apply for nursing jobs and permanent residency pathways in Canada. Opportunities exist across all 13 provinces and territories in five major nursing categories: Critical Care/ICU Nurses, Nurse Aides/Health Care Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)/Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), and Registered Nurses (RNs).
Nurses employed in Canada are well compensated and may also receive additional benefits such as health insurance, retirement benefits, paid leave, relocation assistance (for some positions), and other employment benefits, depending on the employer and province. Registered Nurses typically earn between CAD $70,000 and $130,000 per year, depending on their qualifications, experience, and location. Licensed Practical Nurses generally earn CAD $50,000 to $85,000 per year, while Nurse Practitioners earn CAD $103,000 to $160,000 per year. Nurse Aides and Health Care Assistants typically earn between CAD $38,000 and $85,000 per year, and Critical Care/ICU Nurses generally earn CAD $80,000 to $145,000 per year.
Applications are accepted throughout the year, as there is no single nationwide application deadline. However, individual employers and provincial health authorities may have their own recruitment timelines.
To apply, applicants should note the following:
• Assess Your Credentials: Submit your nursing credentials, license, and work experience to the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) at nnas.ca for an Advisory Report. The assessment process typically takes 12–16 weeks. Depending on the province, applicants may also be required to pass the NCLEX-RN (for Registered Nurses), the REx-PN (or another licensing examination required by the provincial regulatory body for Practical Nurses).
• Educational Requirements: Applicants must have completed an approved nursing program at a university, college, or other recognized institution. Additional education and clinical experience may be required for specialized nursing roles. A master’s or doctoral degree in nursing is generally required for positions such as Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nursing Consultant, Nurse Educator, and Nursing Researcher.
• Demonstrate Language Proficiency: Applicants may be required to provide proof of English or French language proficiency through examinations such as IELTS Academic, CELBAN, or other approved language tests, depending on the requirements of the provincial nursing regulator.
• Apply to a Provincial Nursing Regulator: After receiving an NNAS Advisory Report, applicants should apply for registration with the appropriate provincial regulatory body, such as the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) or the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Some applicants may also need to complete a bridging program before becoming eligible for registration.
• Obtain Registration or Licensure: Registration with the appropriate provincial or territorial nursing regulatory authority is mandatory before practising as a nurse in Canada. Licensing requirements vary by province and territory.
• Secure a Job Offer or Immigration Pathway: Applicants are encouraged to obtain a job offer from a Canadian employer, which may strengthen applications through immigration pathways such as Express Entry, a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), or an employer-supported Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) work permit.
