Ghana’s tallest man, Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as Awuche, passed away at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the early hours of July 27, 2026. News reports state that Awuche had been battling complications from gigantism (acromegaly), a rare hormonal disorder caused by the overproduction of growth hormone in adults, resulting in enlarged hands, feet, and facial features.

Awuche faced frequent hospitalisation, prompting a public appeal for support toward offsetting his medical bills in 2022 and after.

Before his death, Awuche was approximately 7 feet 4 inches tall, that is 2.24 metres. Early reports in 2022 suggested he was 9 feet 6 inches, but that report was unaccepted because the local hospital lacked the equipment to measure him accurately. Later on, a BBC journalist later measured him at 7 feet 4 inches, which became the widely accepted figure.

Awuche attended school in northern Ghana and worked as a mechanic thereafter.
