Every filmmaker has a story they are drawn to tell but what makes that story theirs?
AuteurLab is an online workshop for film students and emerging writer/directors who are seeking to discover, develop, and articulate their artistic voice as filmmakers.
Over five days, participants will explore how to:
- Discover their artistic voice and identity as directors
- Develop compelling story ideas rooted in their creative perspective
- Build complex, memorable characters and purposeful plots
- Use visual storytelling to express what words cannot
- Develop and pitch film projects for production funding
- Understand the value of collaboration in building a creative practice
At the heart of AuteurLab is the belief that filmmaking is not only about learning the craft, it is about discovering how you personally see the world, what moves you, and what only you can bring to the screen. Facilitated by writer/director, Wapah Ezeigwe, the workshop will also draw from his personal experiences of navigating filmmaking as an emerging artist. These experiences become part of the learning process: an honest exploration of the challenges, discoveries, failures, collaborations, and possibilities that shape a filmmaker’s journey.
AuteurLab is a space to question, discover your voice, experiment, create and collaborate.
The workshop will hold virtually from 7th to 11th of September 2026.
Workshop Fee is 20,000 Naira.

WAPAH EZEIGWE is an Igbo Writer/Director. In 2022, they began their film career while studying at the Multichoice Talent Factory where they were amongst the twenty young filmmakers selected from West Africa to be trained in the Academy.
Their debut short film titled, COUNTRY LOVE was released in 2022 and went ahead to screen at various festivals across the world including an Oscar qualifying festival, Out On Film Festival, Atlanta, Vancouver Queer film festival, and was considered for Best short film at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF). The film went ahead to be selected by CINELOGUE, a platform dedicated to cinema from the Global majority, as part of the Afro Queer Voices and was picked by MANSA a Black centered streaming platform, co-founded by British actor, David Oyelowo.
Their sophomore short film, SHALL WE MEET TONIGHT, was commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) for More Films For Freedom, 2025, and had its world Premiere at the BFI Flare Film Festival, London. It was selected as part of the top five films for the Filmjoint Premieres, a festival dedicated to short films in Nigeria, where it won three awards including Best Picture and Best African film.
Wapah was a writer/director finalist for the 2025 Inaugural Sundance Institute Cultural Impact Residency.
