The NNF-IAS Fellowship Program is open for application for its fellowship programme. The programme is a collaboration among the Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies and aims to strengthen international and interdisciplinary research environments across the Nordic region. The fellowship brings researchers together to investigate complex health and sustainability challenges that cannot easily be addressed through a single academic discipline.
“The NNF-IAS Fellowship Programme on Health and Sustainability supports early- and mid-career researchers working on interdisciplinary questions related to health and sustainability. The first call focuses on Inequity in Health, with fellows hosted by advanced study institutes in Denmark, Finland, Norway, or Sweden for a 23-month research fellowship.”
The first fellowship call focuses on Inequity in Health. They defined Inequity in Health as “avoidable and unfair differences in health outcomes or access to health-related opportunities between different groups or populations.”
Fellows can explore either of the following research topics:
- Health inequalities and disparities.
- Social and structural determinants of health.
- Equal opportunities in healthcare and society.
- Health innovations and technologies.
- Connections between health and environmental change.
- Social, economic, and institutional factors affecting health.
- Interdisciplinary approaches to reducing health inequities.
- Global cooperation on health-related challenges.
Applications are open and will close on October 1, 2026. Selected fellows will be affiliated with one of four Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies: AIAS – Denmark, HCAS – Finland, CAS – Norway, and SCAS – Sweden. Although fellows are hosted by one institute, they will participate in a collaborative research group connecting researchers across all four partner institutes.
Every fellow is expected to:
- Reside in the host country during the fellowship.
- Participate actively in interdisciplinary activities.
- Engage with researchers at their host institute.
- Collaborate with fellows and researchers across the Nordic network.
- Contribute to seminars, workshops, and other academic activities.
Selected fellows receive financial and professional supports during the programme. Each fellow receives research budget of up to €20,000, alongside relocation travel expenses, relocation assistance, as well access to academic training, workshops, and conferences. Based on seniority, fellows are put on fulltime salary governed by the relevant collective agreements in the host country. Other benefits abound.
To apply for the fellowship, applicants should have the following:
- A completed PhD.
- 2 to 10 years of post-PhD career experience.
- A research profile relevant to the fellowship theme.
- An interest in interdisciplinary collaboration.
- The ability to participate actively in the Nordic research network.
Note that candidates must not have lived or worked in the country of their preferred host institute for more than 12 months during the two years before the application deadline.
