Zimbabwean writer Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza has won the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing for his short story “The Blue Fighter,” published by The Shallow Tales Review in 2025. The story follows Tinashe, a young boy whose family is thrown into financial difficulty after his father abandons his profession to pursue his passion for building fish tanks, leaving Tinashe’s mother to confront the painful choice between supporting her husband’s dream and securing the family’s survival. Through this domestic conflict, Kundizeza examines fatherhood, ambition and financial hardship, exploring how economic pressures and family circumstances can quietly shape the lives of those caught within them.

Kundizeza’s win follows his selection from a five-story shortlist that included writers from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Cameroon, Nigeria and Egypt. The judges, chaired by journalist Bola Mosuro and including Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond, Orsod Malik, Siphiwo Mahala and Sheila Atim, praised the shortlisted stories for their originality and their ability to make a powerful impact through the short-story form. In announcing “The Blue Fighter” as the winning story, Mosuro described Kundizeza’s prose as luminous and his characters as immediately familiar, highlighting the story’s treatment of denial, frustration, loyalty and quiet strength.

The Caine Prize, which has recognised African short fiction since 2000, awards £10,000 to its winner, while each shortlisted writer receives £500. Kundizeza, who is based in Harare, has previously been a finalist in the 2018 Africa Book Club Short Story Competition, while his debut novel manuscript, Freelance, won the 2024 Island Prize for Debut African Fiction. His work has appeared in Transition Magazine, The Shallow Tales Review and The Wrong Patient and Other Stories from Africa, and he currently serves as an Associate Editor at African Writer Magazine. His Caine Prize win adds another significant distinction to an emerging literary career already marked by recognition for both his short fiction and novel-length work.
