York University is located in Toronto, Canada. It is one of Canada’s fast-growing universities, with research emerging from different departments. While it has strong scientific research and breakthrough discoveries, its strengths lie in the humanities, cultural studies, literature, communication, and creative writing.
York University has enthusiastically welcomed students from around the world and remains committed to supporting this vibrant learning community. Whether they are enrolled in the university’s undergraduate and graduate online programs or its graduate hybrid programs, the university acknowledges that international students can thrive through York University Online.
The university offers both online and on-campus programs. The online courses are available in three faculties: MA Education, MA Healthcare Administration, and MA Organization and Global Leadership. Funding opportunities are available for on-campus entrants, but the university has stated that funding is not automatic for all MA students. Funding packages vary by program and department. One funding option is graduate scholarships, which include Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships. These opportunities are for entrants who will work side by side with lecturers.
However, for PhD students, funding is often automatic. The decision is usually made alongside admission offers. Many doctoral students receive multi-year funding packages that may include tuition support, graduate assistantships, teaching opportunities, and internal scholarships. In addition to these opportunities, York offers other scholarship opportunities for international students, including the $10,000 International Master’s Achievement Scholarship, the Commonwealth Scholarship for citizens of Commonwealth countries, including Nigeria, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarships for doctoral students.
Currently, according to the information on the platform, the university does not offer application fee waivers for international applicants.
Applicants are advised to apply through the university’s online application portal. The following documents must be submitted with the application:
Bachelor’s Degree: Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline from an accredited institution. Graduands will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Military education or degrees from international institutions may be examples of non-accredited institutions. The cumulative GPA must be 2.8 or higher on the undergraduate official transcript. A prospective applicant may be admitted conditionally, as determined by the Program Director, or placed on probationary status when the GPA is marginal.
English Language Proficiency: English proficiency is required. As proof, York University accepts one of the following: ACT or SAT scores, TOEFL scores (minimum of 72 on the Internet-Based Test), or a Duolingo English Test score (minimum requirement of 100). Students who have earned a minimum of 28 semester credits from an accredited U.S. college may be exempt from this requirement.
GRE/GMAT Scores (May Not Be Required): GRE or GMAT scores are not required for normal admission. However, when a prospective student’s academic admission status is in question, submission of GRE or GMAT scores may be required. Furthermore, GRE or GMAT scores may be considered in conjunction with a student’s progress in the program to determine retention eligibility.
Statement of Interest: A 500–1,000-word essay detailing your academic goals, motivation for the field, and past research experience.
Letters of Recommendation: Usually two to three academic references (submitted electronically by your referees) validating your research capabilities.
Curriculum Vitae (CV) / Résumé: A detailed breakdown of your academic background, publications, and relevant work experience.
