Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is a public university located in downtown Toronto. Established in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology, it later became Ryerson University before officially changing its name to Toronto Metropolitan University in 2022. The university is known for its strong connection between academic research and professional practice. Across its seven faculties, it has over 45,000 students from all walks of life.

TMU offers admission to international applicants as well as scholarships. Like other Canadian universities, the university provides funding through Graduate Assistantships, Teaching Assistantships, and entrance scholarships. There are also external scholarships for students to consider. One of these is the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), which provides CAD $5,000 per term to deserving applicants, up to a maximum of CAD $15,000 over two years. Applicants can also consider Mitacs opportunities, which offer paid internships in organizations related to the students’ fields of study.

Admission windows vary according to departments. Generally, the Fall admission window is open between December and February. Some programs also offer Winter/Spring admission, with deadlines typically falling between July and September. These timelines vary by department. The university does not state whether it offers application fee waivers. Applicants can contact the program coordinator to find out if fee waivers are available. The application fee is CAD $110 for all applicants and CAD $150 for MBA applicants.

To apply for admission, applicants must submit the following documents:

Transcript: Unofficial transcripts will be accepted for admission purposes. Please include all of the following when uploading:

  • Transcripts (or mark sheets, where applicable) from every accredited institution attended.
  • Your institution’s grading scale (grading scheme/grading system). This scale is often located on the back of the transcript. Therefore, ensure you upload both sides of your transcript.
  • If your transcript does not include a grading scale, upload a document from the university outlining the grading scale.
  • Transcripts from Canadian institutions do not require a grading scale. If further clarification is required, the admissions team will contact you directly.
  • A notarized English translation if your transcripts or other documents are in a language other than English. Please note that translations do not replace the original documents; both versions must be submitted.

Please note that your application will remain incomplete and will not be forwarded to the program’s admissions committee for consideration until your transcripts have been received and uploaded.

The Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies does not accept external assessments conducted by third-party agencies such as WES or ICAS. However, when requested, it will accept transcript verification and consider copies of transcripts sent directly from WES as official.

Letter of Recommendation: As part of your online application, you will be asked to submit the contact information of one to three referees, depending on the program requirements. It is your responsibility to contact your referee(s) before completing the online application form to confirm their availability. Any requested changes to your referee information after your application has been submitted will require two to three weeks to process due to the volume of requests received.

Your referees will be contacted electronically within two to three business days after you submit your application. They will receive a link and instructions for submitting their references online. Please ensure that the contact information you provide is accurate. It is also your responsibility to follow up with your referees to confirm that they have submitted their references.

All reference letters must be submitted directly by the referees. Student-submitted copies will not be accepted.

English Language Proficiency: All applicants, including those who have completed a degree at a French-speaking institution, are required to provide proof of English language proficiency through one of the accepted examinations listed below unless:

This letter must be submitted through the applicant portal after applying and being requested to upload supporting documents. This requirement applies to all internationally educated applicants, including those currently studying in North America.
