Nigerian author, filmmaker, and literary scholar Onyeka Nwelue is set to begin a promotional tour for his latest novel, Tokyo Spies, on July 12, 2026, with the opening event scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan. The announcement was made by the author through his social media platforms, where he confirmed that the tour would commence in Tokyo before expanding to other locations.

The tour comes at a time when Tokyo Spies continues to generate international attention following reports of a landmark Japanese publishing deal valued at approximately ¥85 million. The novel has been widely discussed across literary circles for its ambitious cross-cultural storytelling and its exploration of Japanese history through the lens of a Nigerian writer.

According to reports, Tokyo Spies is also expected to become the first installment in a planned six-book series centred on Japan, with future novels continuing to examine themes of history, art, exile, and cross-cultural exchange.

Onyeka Nwelue has established himself as one of Nigeria’s most prolific contemporary writers. Since publishing his debut novel, Abyssinian Boy, in 2009, he has authored more than 40 books spanning fiction, memoir, biography, and cultural criticism.

Beyond literature, Nwelue is also a filmmaker, jazz musician, and anthropologist. His documentary The House of Nwapa received a nomination at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, while his Igbo-language feature film Agwaetiti Obiuto earned international recognition and festival acclaim.
