Today, September 15, Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie turns 49. Born in Enugu in 1977 and raised on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka campus, Adichie has, over the past two decades, become one of the most celebrated African writers of her generation. From her debut novel Purple Hibiscus to Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, she has built a literary body of work that has travelled across borders while remaining deeply engaged with questions of Nigeria, identity, womanhood, migration, memory and belonging. Her books have been translated into dozens of languages and read around the world.
Her literary achievements have been accompanied by an extraordinary list of honours. Purple Hibiscus won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book, while Half of a Yellow Sun won the Orange Prize for Fiction and was later named the Women’s Prize for Fiction’s “Best of the Best.” Americanah won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. Beyond her novels, Adichie’s essays and public lectures – particularly We Should All Be Feminists and The Danger of a Single Story – have made her a powerful voice in global conversations about gender, race, storytelling and representation. She received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2008 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017.
At 49, Adichie is also entering this new year of her life after the publication of Dream Count, her first novel in more than a decade. Published in 2025, the novel follows four women navigating love, desire, friendship, motherhood, ambition and the difficult choices that shape a life. It was longlisted for the 2025 Women’s Prize for Fiction and has added another chapter to an already remarkable literary career.
As we celebrate Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie today, we pray that this new year brings her gentleness after all she has endured. May she find comfort, healing, and a renewed sense of peace in the days ahead. May she be surrounded by love, held by grace, and given the strength to find joy again. Happy 49th birthday, Chimamanda.
