Writers from UNESCO Cities of Literature have a new international opportunity to connect with Melbourne’s literary community through the Virtual Writers in Residence 2026 programme. Taking place throughout November, the paid residency matches selected writers with literary organisations across Melbourne for a month of creative exchange, workshops, public conversations, written projects, or other innovative collaborations. Each resident will receive an honorarium of AUD $1,500 while retaining full copyright to any work they produce.
Participants can choose to work with one of several host organisations, including 100 Story Building, Melbourne Writers’ Theatre, The Little Bookroom, The Victorian Pride Centre, Moorabool Libraries, and others. Hosts are seeking writers with diverse interests, from playwriting, children’s literature, and community storytelling to queer narratives, women’s writing, and interdisciplinary creative practice. Applicants are encouraged to propose up to three activities for their chosen organisation, with workshops, panel appearances, written pieces, and even original “wild ideas” all welcome.
To be eligible, applicants must be writers currently living in one of UNESCO’s recognised Cities of Literature. Alongside collaborating with their host organisation, selected residents will participate in regular meetings with fellow writers in residence, creating opportunities to build lasting international literary connections. Interested writers can apply by nominating their preferred host organisation and outlining how they hope to contribute to Melbourne’s vibrant literary landscape.
