Laurentian University is located in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. Established in 1960 as a bilingual, non-denominational institution, the university has developed strong research and graduate education programs, particularly in Indigenous Studies, Health Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Studies, and Interdisciplinary Research. One of its distinctive features is its commitment to offering instruction in both English and French.
Currently, the university is open for admissions for its Fall intake, with a deadline of June 15. It also offers a Winter intake, with a closing deadline of October 15, and a Spring/Summer intake beginning in May, with an application deadline of February 15. However, some graduate programs may close earlier. Applicants are encouraged to apply early, as international students require additional time for study permit processing. An application is considered complete only when all required documents have been submitted.
Laurentian provides funding opportunities for research-based Master’s students and some PhD students. There is also the Dean’s Entrance Scholarship, valued at $1,500 CAD for Master’s students and $3,000 CAD for Doctoral students. In addition, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is a merit-based award for which international applicants may be eligible.
To apply for scholarships, applicants must use the online application form to upload all supporting documents, which can be tracked through the myLaurentian Portal. Required documents vary by program, but the standard checklist includes the following:
Transcripts: Complete academic records from all previously attended post-secondary institutions. International applicants may be required to obtain a WES Credential Evaluation as part of their application. Applicants should arrange for their previous institutions to send official transcripts directly to the Office of Admissions. Transcripts are considered official only if they arrive in a sealed envelope directly from the issuing institution’s Registrar’s Office.
Statement of Interest/Intent: A personal essay detailing the applicant’s academic goals, research interests, and reasons for applying to the chosen program. It should explain why Laurentian University is the most suitable institution for their ambitions and what they hope to achieve after completing their studies.
Letters of Reference: Generally, three academic or professional references are required, although this varies by department and faculty. Referees should have either worked with the applicant or be familiar with the achievements listed in the applicant’s CV.
Curriculum Vitae (CV): A document outlining the applicant’s educational background, work experience, and relevant accomplishments that prepare them for graduate studies.
Language Proficiency Scores: Required if the applicant’s previous degree was not earned in English or French. In such cases, IELTS or TOEFL scores must be submitted. Some programs, such as the MBA, may require GMAT or GRE scores, while thesis-based programs often require applicants to secure a faculty supervisor before applying.
